After the first class, I can tell that this is going to be a “hands-on” course, it’s definitely not going to be bored. It also reminded me two of my master courses. For one of the course, we had to read tons of reading materials related to language development and it’s origine, post our reflections, and respond to each other’s reflections. So reading 30 to 50 replies each time was nothing surprising. It was not an easy task, but it’s definitely worthy to do so. I gained a lot and learned tons from others after the course. Application: 1. Blog is great to use with MS/HS students (they are the IT generation anyway) 2. Putting theories into practice requires applications 3. Reflections are an important key to learners, so I would like to apply it in my high school Chinese classes, we did a goal-seting sheet at the beginning of this year, I would like to follow that up to see their reflections.
Good comments Shira, and you are right about these MS students, a lot of them are ahead of us in the IT area. But that's Ok, sometimes I even ask them to help me, they love the idea of knowing more than the teacher in certain areas. Thanks, Andy
It’s me again. I just want to share from the reading. There are seven underlying assumptions about organization that are out of date. Among these seven, there’s one that I super strongly agree with---That there is a single right way to manage people. This is sooooooo wrong. Adults are like our young learners, we are all different. If we need to differentiate learning approaches for our students, why can’t we “differentiate” management approaches with our teaching/non-teaching staff? In the multiple organization structures, Mr. Drucker mentioned that the organization should have only one “master.” Here I have a big question mark in my head---How about shared leadership? Isn’t this one master principle contradictory to the shared leadership? To be continued---part 2: the three applications…Shira
Since it is my first semester in here, everything for me is new, strange, and making me nervous sometime. Many of reading is not easy for me, I know, however, it does very good and necessary for studying. And for me with the first period of the class. I found that 1. Just reading is not enough, we must be able to transmit the knowledge we got from reading to others. As Dr. Goodman try to assign us to present our idea that we got from reading. This is very good idea. Absolutely this is not the new thing, but many times we forgot to do like this. We just assign students in a class for reading some books and then we just check their work by let them take a test or quiz, even we can let them share their reading experience together with their comment on reading in the class by power point or the other ways. 2. For the new era, we have to show our competency in synthesize information that we got in order to create the new thing. Why do we have to do that? Because we are a leader! If we cannot do anything new or strange, we are not a leader. 3. I found that for the new World, we cannot decline to use the technology. No matter it will useful for us or not, we still has to use it, since it is one of the new World symbolic. If we avoid to use it, we are running away of the real World. We have to have positive thinking with the technology, then we will find that it is very useful.
These reflections are a good start. Shira, I think Drucker is not saying that there is always only one master but that at times there has to be a final authority. So shared leadership still will work in certain situations, though perhaps not in all. However, I look forward to hearing your insights on this. Andy
Dear everyone, I 've started reading the document due to new management paradigms; in my opinion I am concerned with the conflict management due to the case study reading it.Also, the class is very active due to technology and materials have to be print out into hard copy itself. however, act upon leader of the school we 're going to be the one who change and transform the new direction of the school to new era of 21 st.century.
Hi every one, Regarding the Drucker’s assumptions in Management, there is a point that am not agree with and shira also mentioned about that. Drukcher asserts that in an organization , the manager should be regarded as boss and some one to be obeyed ( that for me is very similar to the one who should be feared of). For me management responsibility is burdon has to be carried out by all members. In the new era, great leaders are skilled to work in a team as best as possible, they elicit the ideas of their staffs, put them together and make the final conclusion; Leadership is more about compromising among the different ideas of members not issuing the last word. In hierarchy system that Drucker considered to be the most useful one, employees feel as inferiors and never allow themselves to oppose or argue with the manager even when he is wrong, so they get passive role and many of unique and valuable ideas of them never revealed. Just unlike inspirational and motivational leaders who make the staffs feel values and provide them with enough opportunity to contribute in making decisions. Unlike what drucker says that at the time of crisis it should be one person who decides, I doubt that one person can handle a problematic situation by himself. Dilemmas that an organization might go through have to be managed by all members. Even if there is time shortage and not all employees can be included in decision making, top advisors and employees with leadership potential can be asked to help out. So, I think good managers realize the fact that they will achieve more by working with others and don’t rely on their own ideas solely and in short, shared leadership works all the times and in any situation.
I don't think either Shira or Sarah's comments are incompatible with what Drucker is saying, however we will discuss this more in class. Glad to get some dialogue going! Andy
Hi all, In my opinion with the same topic as Shira and Sara comments, I think it is the style of leadership that should depend on situation. I was asked this questioned once since last year which I take the leadership class. Mt teacher, Dr. Uwarow, he is a Ukrainian asked in his class about what style of leadership is the best for us. We have a lot of discussion and finally we agree that we can't have a judgment what style of leadership is the best. Since we have to think about many factors of an organization. Some place we can work as a team, but some place or some situation need one man show. And if we will look at the truth, we will find that there are not any style of leadership is the most perfect. They have both positive side and also negative side. For instance, If you are establishing a new factory, you may not be able to work with new members as a team since they don't know anything about your factory. On the other hand you may have action like "Boss" but you can be a very good boss. Your homework is how you can get your employee's heart. You can be a boss but you can your love, kindness, gentle, and so on to your staff. And this is real, I personally found that sometime when I tried to work with my staffs as a team work, but they are not ready to do that. They just need order, or direction something like that. To work as a team we it may the best way, but in the real World, someplace, some situation can't be like that. However, I also love to work as a team more than the other ways. But I just say that it does not mean the other style of leadership are not good. TOM
I agree with you Shira. But, this is my first experience to use blog and find interesting. From the first class, i see that we will have tons of materials and hope we have time to read and prepare for them. I don't have much yet from the first class except the tasks and rules and regulations of the marks and assignments. We knew most of the work before the first class though. However, when i saw the first reading assignment on blog, i was excited. Because I am interested in the paradigm shift since last year. The less the students are interested in learning, the more I would like to find the problems. What are their distractions? My applications are: 1. the first class drew me more attention to inspire beyond my reach. 2. to me, the students are less and less interested in learning especially Mathematic subjects. I think the requirement assigned by ministry of education and what the students are interested in are not matched. (i think it is because of paradigm shift that force us and the sufferers are the students.) 3. i hope, by gaining some knowledge from this class, i help my students in their learning processes. Thanks Valentine
I resisted using this format because I am unfamiliar with it and an slow to change. That's pretty ironic considering we are suppposed to be change agents. As i am preparing this email, I am embracing this challenge in harmony with colleagues who are walking me through this. I attended a faculty meeting yesterday and witness a live document through google docs. This is what has encouraged me to try. So here's my reflection and my attempt at conforming to change. I have learned that gmail can: 1. Links all of us under the chat feature providing quick responses in real time. 2. Part of the google suit of services such as google docs. and gmail. 3. I never contributed to a blog or through this format and can already seee the benefits of using this application at work for meetings within my department
It's the first time for me to use the blog. With Shira's help,I finally can send the messages tonight. Andy's comments on last Thursday gave me deep imprerssion. He told us to keep reading before the classes even if you can not understand some parts of the materials. To tell you the truth, I really need some helps in my understanding about some materials. Thanks for your helping. Bonnie
I have received the first Dr. Andy email that forward by Niti and I was feel like this is the new way for me to use another aspect of technology. It was very beneficial. I have know this kind of Blog before but I have never used it. So, now it s a time to practice and use it. Thank you to let me know new thing. Also ,the blog that Dr.Andy gave us for using it was definitely good. Since it let us to know more other side of people thinking as well. So that s mean we might amount of good idea to develop us as the educational person who have a big role to help the student and school grow effectively. Then , when the class began and I was in the room I could feel that the atmosphere of the classroom have changed because there was a new instructor who I never have class before in this faculty. Moreover, I was very appreciate that Dr. Andy understood the student who was not good at English like me. I will try my best to be good student Aey
Hi all, Apologies for being late response. This is my first experience to use blog to response and to share with others for academics purpose. I usually communicate or chat with friends and others through face book blog. I do agree with you all that this might very much useful for all to communicate, to share an opinion and reflection on what we have study in class. We are in the modern world towards globalization is putting the world at our fingertips, let us go on and enjoy our trip within a second. The first week class for this course I found that there is something new happening in our PhD. Class, Since Dr. Andy told us to use the blog for the reflection with his warmth welcome. I’ve started reading the Drucker article and found that a new management paradigms very much important for the 21st century leaders to change the new thing happen and challenge the new world, while adjust the work force to meet the organization common goal. I need to read more to get understanding and have some idea to share tomorrow night.
Hi, everyone. I really enjoyed all the comments regarding the role of an educational manager as a leader in educational transition era of today. In today knowledge base economy, recognizing the role of an educator as a leader in any level of education and higher education seems to be vital. In the level of Ph.d, it is important to establish an effective learning center community in order to pursuit knowledge in the research and pragmatic level of the dynamic society. Transition the teacher center style to student center style in order to transmit knowledge and understanding in the highest standard for the benefit of the nation is one of the roles of educational leaders. I hope by end of this course we are able to present a pragmatic model of leadership to be able to transform our management style toward authentic leadership style to provide and lead successfully in the learning community. Three application of this course for students are: 1. To think critically 2. To be lifelong learner 3. To be a researcher to advance knowledge to meet national and international challenges. Fatima
Special hello toTom, my new neighbor. What a coincident we found we stay in the same community! Thanks Dr.Andy bring us together.
After reading Drucker’s article, I felt too many things going on in this literature like essay. And he gave us quite a review of the history of management development in both research way and real practice examples.
Most of his points of views we have discussed less or more since we start learning leadership from last semester. Though there is one point that he mentioned about selecting the top management people: How were these people selected and who will succeed them and by what process. What are the safeguards to assure that the successor will be the best person for the job and according to him people pay little attention to the succession process though it is in fact the ultimate test of good management.
It reminds me of my last semester’s presentation about the Chairperson of Cokecola, Roberto C. Goizueta, who actually transforming the world of Coke, spent over 10 years to train and develop his successor M.douglas Ivester. He always believed that your lasting leadership value will be measured by succession.
So I think for this point, I may can answer Drucker’s doubt above: Lead the organization with a long view, create a leadership culture when you on top, pay the price today to assure success tomorrow, value team leadership above individual leadership and finally walk away from the organization with integrity.
As Drucker said very beginning in his essay, in a fast-changing world today, what worked yesterday probably doesn’t work today. Some of these out of date assumptions he raised here might be already been resolved during the real practice by the successful leaders these days, while some of the other management problems just surfacing the water and waiting us to discover and study.
After the first class, I can tell that this is going to be a “hands-on” course, it’s definitely not going to be bored. It also reminded me two of my master courses.
