Reflections Week Seven
The transformation process in education as we discussed it has three component parts, or blocks. We can look at the leadership, the organization and management practices as the first block, and at this level buy in is the critical element for successful change. Buy in will come primarily from the involvement of all individuals at every level of the organization. Further along, the second block is the actual teaching practices, and we must strive to train our teachers through continuous professional development to meet the challenges of change. The final component or block needed for successful change implementaion is to create links with universities or businesses, the wider community. For these links to work, there has to be a constancy of relationship building and partnerships will be a key element of this success. Please post reflections here, Thanks, and again Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to All of You. God Bless, Dr. Andy

Dr Andy Late arrival for EL 8312 class 6:30 PM:
Hi, for this week seven class, I must apologize to all of you and ask
for your understanding, as unfortunately I will be arriving late for
the class. This is due to a Christmas party for teachers,
administrators, and staff of Ruamrudee International School. Although
the party runs from 5 to 10 PM, I will go and stay for only the first
part, and should arrive at the University hopefully by 6:30 PM. I will
skip the dinner, and my wife and children will stay there on my
behalf. In the meantime, can you please organize yourselves into
groups of two to three and discuss the questions below with the
reading given to you earlier as the background material for your
discussion. I should be there by about 6:30 PM and will do my
introduction when I arrive. So please begin without me at 6. Thanks
and again, my apologies. Best Wishes, Dr. Andy

Blogs and Common Sense
Hello, just want to clarify something here. To keep things simple, I am only putting up one section for questions each week and one section for reflections.
My view is that if I put up all the posts for all the weeks right away, we would have massive confusion and nobody would be able to figure out where to post.
But of course I AM giving some of the READINGS in advance, so you can prepare for what is coming up. If you want to post something about a future reading as a question, then you can either post it in the week we are currently in, which, right now, for example, would be week three; or you can post it in the section created for that reading if I have already posted it on the blog. For example, for week four, I have already posted an advance notice of what we will be discussing, so if you have questions about that reading then you could place them there.
Please re-read this carefully two to three times if needed so you understand it.
If confused still, please ask here or e-mail me. Thanks, Dr. Andy

Please Use the Questions section posted each week
Hi Everybody, I am getting some really great questions but unfortunately you are not benefitting from the answers since many of them so far have come by email. Unfortunately, I simply to not have the time to keep cutting and pasting questions and answers to the blog, since it can take up to fifteen to twenty minutes per string, depending on the nature of the question and answer. So can I please ask you to all help each other by posting your questions on the blog. It really is helpful for all of us to have a record. So please use the questions section posted each week. I am posting this request to the blog as well the email I have already sent you. Thanks Dr. Andy

Week Four notes
Hi All, you really only need to read Chapter Four of my dissertation, "Innovation and Educational Leadership Challenge: A Developmental Approach" to prepare for next week and it is not too long, since there are a lot of charts and blank
spaces. If you want to read more than that, it will probably help,
you but we will concern ourselves mostly with the ideas in chapter
four.
Consider:
- How a process model like this might be useful in evaluating and
improving upon our leadership.
- The nature of challenges and how we can deal with them.
- What other writers have said about leadership challenges.
- Your personal ideas regarding a process model such as this.
- How focussing on processes such as these is likely to give us a
differing perspective on key aspects of leadership in education
spaces. If you want to read more than that, it will probably help,

Expectations for Week Three class
Hi All, I just want to give you a quick sequence of how we will be proceeding tonight, so you can prepare yourselves in terms of your expectations for the class. By now you will have all read over the UN document relating to Education for All and the Global Economic Symposium material relating to overcoming challenges through education. Also, no doubt you have prepared some notes on the questions I gave you earlier. For tonight, keep the following in mind:
- We will begin with an overview of the current educational situation in global terms and what the expectations might be for leadership in terms of creating change and improvement. (about 30 minutes)
- We will then form into groups to consider each of the five questions, each group will study two questions, the one on personal reactions and one other, as designated
- Groups will discuss and prepare short presentations of 10 to 15 minutes on the question using the material in the folder given to them (about 30 minutes)
- Five mini presentations will be given on the five questions, one by each group (about an hour and fifteen minutes, or 75 minutes)
- We will have a debrief and time for questions and concerns (about 15-20 minutes)
Looking forward to a Fantastic Class! Thanks, Dr. Andy

Dr. Andy Working with Schools
Hi there everybody, I am planning on working with some schools in the ensuing months with the goal of helping to facilitate improved teaching practices and enhancing learning for students. Most likely this would be using a workshop presentation type format with follow up as needed or requested. I have already done this type of work with several schools in the past and am interested in expanding upon some of these efforts. This is a separate initiative from my work at ABAC or my current international school teaching at RIS, and would be scheduled on a case by case basis with schools requesting the services. Please let me know outside of class if you are interested or feel your school might benefit. Or you can just comment on this post and we can discuss ideas. Thanks, Dr. Andy

Sample Reflection
Hi, to help you out, here's a sample reflection from one of my students who is a 'veteran' at this by now (she's now in her second class with me). Hopefully, this will help you understand the process, if you are struggling with the whole reflection idea. The class session was on student engagement. Best, Dr. Andy
Here is the reflection:
Hi everyone! There was an enormous information learned in this week's class with Dr. Andy and I guess, everyone did enjoy every minute of his lectures and the activities that we were assigned to do. I firmly believe that a teacher who has a good understanding of the so called "learning" would indulge his/her students more by engaging them through various activities. All of us know that they gain more knowledge by doing rather than the traditional way of teaching them wherein, the teacher dominates the stage most of the time (this will also remind us of how we would be able to manage the time set for every period). As teachers, we ought to look at the curriculum objectives and not rely on our own way. When we teach, we have procedures (process) that we follow for every lessons that we give, including the activities that will engage them for further learning and the end result (product) that will tell us, if the students understand what we are discussing in the class, actually, this will show, if they are able to follow and perform the activities given to them with the proper knowledge and skills. I would also like to add that engaging our learners through related activities for every lesson will build their enthusiasm more, interest, and will motivate them to go to the next level. Moreover, this will lead to a better teacher-student rapport. Students have lots of questions, I have some who frequently asks, "Teacher, what are we going to do today?" That means that they really are looking forward not only to the knowledge that they will gain but for them, the most interesting part are the activities, after you are done with your lectures. These things will motivate them especially,if you give them something which they can really apply into a real life situation.
With these, here are my 3 applications:
1. I will continue giving my students the related activities for every lesson and I will see to it that it will contain all the necessary ingredients such as: visual, auditory and kinesthetic activities. This will help them understand the lesson and discover their own potentials.
2. In the school where I am teaching (we would soon have the Mini-English program), I will suggest about the "Thematic Units" wherein, teachers would be able to help each other by integrating basic units like science, math, art, English, social studies- having one theme.
3. I will plan my lessons well and put up interesting activities that my students can apply into a real life situation. Reflecting on all of these will help me grow to be an effective teacher.
Cheers,

Filming classes
Hello, I would like to do some filming of some of our classes. I was wondering if there might be one or two students who have a decent movie camera and would be willing to help by filming some of the sessions and posting them on youtube. I have a site already and can give you the access information if you wish to do this. Basically, it would involve shooting some video, doing a bit of editing, and posting the work to youtube each week. The videos can be used for review, plus it will be nice to have a record of what we are discussing. Later, we can use my movie camera, if needed, however right now it is being repaired.
You would write a short reflection of about a page regarding what you learned from the video taping and this would count as your application paper. I am Ok with two or possibly three students doing this as a team effort if they wish. The one page reflections would be individual, however.
Let me know as soon as you can if you are interested, and bring a movie camera to class next week, so we can tape some of the third session. Thanks, Dr. Andy

Week Two: expectations for tonight's class
Hello all, I am sending out a quick e-mail (and blog post) just to
give you a heads up in terms of expectations for tonight's class.
By now you will have all completed the Drucker reading, and I want to
note with enthusiasm that some of you have already posted some of your
views of certain aspects of the reading on the blog. This is an
excellent start!
We will begin with about a thirty minute intro, in which I will point
out a few key aspects of the reading and some of the historical
contexts, etc. Basically, the purpose of this is to make sure that we
all have at least an outline understanding of the material before
going into further activities in groups. This should take about a half
an hour.
Next, you will break out into four groups, I will mostly likely just
number you off, and then we will work in four stations of fifteen
minutes each. The first of these involves understanding of the
reading itself, the assumptions Drocker makes, and whether and how you
think they could be amended. The other three stations involve our
individual use of the ideas, managment theory implications, and
adaptations for use in schools. These four stations will be done on a
rotation basis of about fifteen minutes each for a total of about an
hour.
We will follow this with about a half hour discussion and debrief on
our impressions derived from working through these four stations.
Then, we will look at any questions or issues arising from the
readings or any other aspect of the course you might like to discuss.
I will not schedule a break, however you may take one as your
individual needs or tastes dictate.
I hope you are all looking forward to a terrific and enriching
experience tonight. I know I am!
God Bless, see you in class! Dr. Andy

Process Questions Peter F. Drucker
Hello Everybody, I hope you enjoyed the overview tonight and are looking forward to a terrific course. I know I am. Please keep the following process questions in mind while doing the Drucker reading. You may want to take a few notes of ideas relating to each group of questions. This is not mandatory but may prove helpful to you. We will do some activities relating to these questions next session. Here are the questions:
- How do you think Drucker went about deriving his list of key change areas? Do you agree with the list? What could be added in or taken out?
- Drucker seems to feel a lot of our management theories are hopelessly out of date? Do you agree with this? Why or why not?
- How do these ideas apply to your own work or teaching/leadership situation? What applications do they have for your lives?
- How could these ideas be used in schools? What adjustments would be needed?
Best Wishes, see you next week, Andy

EL 8312 Welcome from Dr. Andy:
Dear Students, welcome to EL 8312, Management Sciences in Educational Transformation. We will be working together to enhance our practices in schools and school leadership over the sixteen weeks of this course, which will entail cooperative and interactive efforts, regardless of where we may currently be in terms of our knowledge or expertise. This blog will be where the majority of the assignments and readings, including the course syllabus and rubrics for assignments, will be posted. There may be some readings that you will get via a scan in addition to the resources provided on the blog. Each week, students will also be asked to reflect on the class discussion or activity that took place. Ten reflections will be required. Students will post the reflection in the week following, due before the start of the next class, each week. It is also suggested that you check the reflections of others, or my comments, and use the post each week as a way of gaining and sharing knowledge with each other.
The main course requirements will shortly be posted in the syllabus, however here is a quick overview of the course requirements: Attendance at all classes is highly encouraged; attendance at 80% of the sessions is required. 10% of the grade will relate to attendance and participation. A presentation (in groups to be discussed in the first class session) will be required relating to applying educational transformation processes in a school setting. 20 % of your grade will be allocated according to your efforts in this project. You will present this to the class, in an interactive manner, in the last three sessions with the schedule to be set-up as discussed with the course instructor. An application paper will be required, of 12 to 15 pages length. This is a research paper that will relate some aspect of management or leadership transformation in schools theory to an area of your interest. It may be related to your area of presentation if you wish, though this is not required. 15% of the course grade relates to this paper. The ten reflections discussed above will account for a further 15%. Finally, after the fifteen sessions are complete (session fifteen will be an exam review) there will be a final exam accounting for 40% of your grade. The exam will follow a case study, response, and essay type format.
I wish you all well on the course and look forward to our time together. Please comment on this post to ask questions so all may benefit from the answers. This will be the procedure for all posts. Of course, if you have a personal issue to discuss, or just want to discuss something outside of the blog format, you may always call or email.
Let's have a great course! Dr. Andy
