For this week, rather than comment on the actual assignment itself or the content, I would like you to reflect on how you felt about doing a class like this online, versus with an in class activity. Advantages, disadvantages, etc. Please reflect on your ideas
after having completed the excercise for week ten, here, Thanks!
As I have busy schedule for this week, I appreciated this style of learning for this week, because I chose my time and space according to most convenient of my timetable. On the other hand, I had to spend time to download my assignment in the webpage as it didn’t accept my assignment many times, so in that case I prefer traditional classroom to have a live interaction with the class members and enjoy having supervision regarding class discussion to avoid repetition. At the end, I prefer on line class for time flexibility, geographic flexibility, no dress code and because shy students can feel more comfortable; then again, on line class have disadvantages of lack of direct interaction, isolation from other students, lack of mandatory discipline and time management skill and user has to access to knowledge and technology of computer science. As I am a socialized person and I prefer face to face discussion, may be the traditional classroom would suit me better.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend
Well goes an old saying, “Two heads are better than one!” I enjoyed listening and talking to people, but I also appreciated being able to work from home, because I really, really, really needed to get the school activity done on Thursday. The flexibility of working online is an evidence of the new age of education. Imaging that people can work “together” from different countries, how great that is. Somehow, using online to work with the others, needs to require some extra patience though, because not everybody could reply to your concerns or questions right there unless it’s prearranged.
ReplyDeleteSee...I didn’t have time to read e-mail on Friday the whole day. By the time I got a chance to read them I found that Tom was asking a question related to the assignment, he already posted his assignment on the blog. And I don't know if anyone has explained to him. So Tom, are you clear with the 5a question now? I hope so. Shira
I explained 5a to Tom and he said he was ok with it. Thanks for your concern Shira.

ReplyDeleteThis format show flexibility and how the future of ICT is headed. I echo the words of Michael Parrot………….”This will probably be my last formal style of educational classes.” Online formats, virtual reality, and who knows what else will take over in the future simply because educational institutions will use ICT to reach the world masses. Thus bringing closer the gap between the “haves and have nots!” I agree with Fatima that with this format, no direct interaction is established, no public debates or expressive exchanges of ideas, and most importantly………….no way of identifying the CHARACTER of the students you are studying with! Maybe this is a glimpse into the future of employment as well. More and more jobs will be set up to be worked from “distance” or home. Will there be a need for an elaborate corporate office 50 floors high any more?
For me, I prefer to participate in class since the more we talk and the more we interaction that make we understand more each other. However, online discussion can help us when we don’t have a chance to talk with friend so I think ICT is able to assist us more flexible when we lack direct conversation. Finally the both of face to face discussion and online way are able to fulfill learning process be more complete. We can say that this is a one kind of learning style.
ReplyDeleteI am always advocate for the flexibility in education. I am now sitting in the Subway at central world doing my homework. More than that , someone fear to talk in the classroom find themselves safe and free to say the thing they want to say, share their opinion they might find difficult to explain clearly in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteI love face to face debate and sharing, however, if technology enable us to do it anytime, anywhere, we shall maximize it's efficiency and effectiveness in this new way of communication.
If all of us are ICT equipped, say we can use Webex or even TelePresence occasionally to do our work together at real time and discussion online, or watch the guest speaker giving live lecture and sharing the resources everywhere. A learning Society is not far from us.
I would say I love the online class. It very useful. I think it's better than to cancel a class. And many of lessons we can learn by the online. Absolutely, facing conversation still necessary, but the online for some vacation also benefit for us. In the future I would love to see we will have a class online by both of us just stay in different place, Kris at the starbuck, Fatima at the tenth floor, Shira at her school, something like that. But by the VDO conference through the 3G technology we can learn a class together at the same time. Who know!
ReplyDeleteHi everyone! here are some of my point of view to share about doing class online versus with an in class activity
ReplyDeleteDoing class online
Advantage:
1) Time flexibility to focus on working and response that student can work longer hour and this might be a big help to search more information to support the assignment.
2) feel more comfortable for some students who those hate to participate in live class discussions.
3) Save time and travel cost
4) Improve more knowledge in using technology while searching information to support an idea in widely resources from an internet.
Disadvantage 1) Time flexibility might caused discipline and time management skills are endatory ...Sabai...Sabai…might aused of the laziness 2) Lack of direct interaction with the instructor if any question required
3) Lacked of class activity with friend and different idea and opinion from other to improve learning understanding, some area of academic need team work to enhance the learning
In class activity:
Advantage: 1) Group working and sharing idea among the classmate while enjoying the activity and different ideas and opinion are develop 2) Face to face communication and direct response from the lecturer on matter and unclear points 3) More information and knowledge is focused on the issue or real situation
4) A greater number and diversity of alternatives can be develop among the classmate
5) Better understanding and acceptance of the final decision
Disadvantage:
1) Time consuming some area might need more time to work on to get a better result and understanding, especially the student who those not good enough in understanding English
2) Disagreements may delay decisions and cause hard feelings
3) One or two group members may dominate discussion
4) Many ideas may be forgotten if no note taking
5) Bore for silence student or little talk people
Happy Chinese New Year for all Chinese friends!

GREAT reflections on the differences and advantages/disadvantages of both the traditional and online methods.
ReplyDeleteThank you Dr.Andy!
ReplyDeleteIt is not bad to do online studying once in a while. However, I prefer learning in classroom. It shows more human. Not only that, when people learn something, it is not only words they learn. They learn from five senses which we just can get from classroom. Some people are not able to response at once in class but they generate or digest what they hear, see and feel in classroom. As for me, online studying throughout the semester is a boring. Because even the movies which are famous showing at the Cineplex make me fall in sleep from time to time. But I like online movies because I can pause any time that I am bored.
ReplyDeletep.s.
sorry for very very late. But I tried to accomplish it. Thanks a lot for your patience Dr.
